DIY: Back Up Camera and Sensor Install

A while back I purchased a wireless back up camera from 4ucam.com and also an electromagnetic back up sensor kit from Pepboys.
I got tired of touching the rear bumper and the factory kit was way too expensive. I also did'nt want to clutter the dash with gadgets and hate reversing without turning around to look out the rear window,so I got a relatively large screen (7") so that it can be seen from the front driver seat. The electromagnetic sensor complements the camera with the audible beep. The nice thing about it is that there is no drilling of the bumper involved. The sensor is just a long tin foil type tape that is stuck to the inside of the bumper!
The project came out pretty good and both systems work like a charm!

Rear area dismantled to run wires for the sensor, sensor horn and camera.

How tough is taking the panels off? My passenger rear seatbelt mechanism rattles and I want to take a look to see if it is something obvious.

Yeah thats the one, and it produces an electromagnetic field that senses when an object breaks the field its making. The more the field is broken (closer you get to the object) the quicker the beeps get. Placement of the magnetic strip will vary sensitivity; It cant sense through metal, only plastic, etc.
As i stated in my initial post, mine works quite excellently (event picks up the sidewalk curb) and I am gonna get another one to install on the front bumper too!

This is a relatively new product but is widely popular in Europe (other companys other that the VPRS100)!

hi wspy,

Just wandering did you have to slice any wires to install the power for the rear camera? Where did you slip the wires into from license plate?

thank you for the help and great job.

^^ I had to drill the plastic panel (garnish) that surrounds the lever for opening the rear hatch and then drill the actuall hatch itself (metal) then thread the wire for the camera through. Use a grommet on the metal hole and seal both with silicone. The camera wires are a simple hookup after that, just ground one and get power from splicing into the reverse light wire!

So when looking at the pics is the assumption you're going to view the rear view cam in your rear view mirrow or you're going to turn your head around to view it? Not quite sure I see the point of it being in the back seat especially if someone is sitting there. Did you see about placing the monitor up front somewhere but it just didn't fit? Just curious.

I prefer to turn around and look through the rear window so the screen back there gives a better overall view of outside while I look back!
I didnt want to clutter the front dash area with a screen!
